It puts us just in front of Ireland, two places ahead of Germany and four higher than the US.

But the report suggests the happier we become the less likely we are to support leaving the EU.

Those cheesed off with life were more likely to vote Leave and to boot out the Government, it states.

Researcher Prof Richard Layard, from the London School of Economics, said: “If governments want to stay in power they should take the happiness of the people more seriously than economic measures.”

The ranking is based on ratings from up to 3,000 people in each country. The happiest country for the second year running is Finland, with South Sudan least happy.

Other data puts Britain in the top 25 for social support, GDP, life expectancy and freedom from corruption.

Brits are also fourth most generous to charity but lag 63rd on freedom to make life choices.
