A RETIRED fertility expert who impregnated dozens of unwitting patients with his OWN sperm has been confirmed to be father to at least 48 children.

Most of Dr Donald Cline's many offspring have only just found out their true identity - 16 months after the 80-year-old dodged jail.

Heather Woock, of Indianapolis, told when a stranger reached out to her in August 2017 claiming to be her half sibling she just didn't believe it.

The 33-year-old 's mother told her not to worry until several others claiming to be her half siblings also came knocking.

They had tracked her down on social media through an Ancestry.com account she created when her husband gave her a DNA test for Christmas.

Her parents, who went to Cline for donor insemination, had absolutely no idea he used his own sperm for their sample.

DNA tests from services including Ancestry.com have already confirmed at least 48 children were fathered by Cline - but the actual number is likely to be higher.

One of the first people to discover that Cline was their dad was Jacoba Ballard.

She'd known since childhood she was conceived via sperm donor and signed up for an online forum for donor-conceived children.

FACEBOOK CLUES

Before long she located another woman who had been treated by Cline and checked out her Facebook photos.

Ballard said: "I was like, Oh my goodness, I think that is my sister."

One of the women who was inseminated by Cline more than a dozen times over a five-month period also told the Atlantic: "I feel like I was raped 15 times."

Liz White, now 66, had gone to Cline's office with her husband in 1981, and at first found him to be a kind, gentle man. She later gave birth to her son Matt.

Cline was given a one-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to two counts of obstruction of justice.

No other charges were filed against the 79-year-old Clint because Indiana law doesn't specifically prohibit fertility doctors from using their own sperm.

Cline was charged after lying to investigators, potentially facing up to three years in prison on each count.

The dodgy doc told his patients they were receiving sperm from medical or dental residents or medical students, and that no single donor's sperm was used more than three times, according to court records.

Cline, who retired in 2009, initially denied the allegations when he wrote to investigators, saying the women who filed the complaints were trying to slander him.

"Out of fear I acted alone and foolishly lied," he said during the hearing with a sometimes shaky voice.

But he mentioned only the two women who first filed complaints. He also didn't discuss his decision to use his own sperm in the 1970s and 1980s.
