CELEBRITIES who cash in by plugging dodgy fad diets on social media were on Wednesday blasted by Theresa May.
The Prime Minister warned stars they risk fuelling an eating disorder epidemic that is “devastating lives”.
Kim Kardashian, Vicky Pattison and Katie Price are among those who have been paid to promote unproven products including diet pills, detox teas and appetite-suppressant sweets.
Speaking in PMQs, Mrs May stormed: “Young people may be encouraged to take products because of celebrity endorsement.
“And celebrities who are doing that should think very carefully about the impact that these products can have in having the effect of eating disorders which can devastate people’s lives.”
Tory MP Rebecca Pow warned that many thousands of girls are being lured into buying diet quick-fixes by social media stars.
She said: “This irresponsible and unsafe endorsement of these products should be addressed.”
Their intervention comes after Britain’s top doctor called for the celebrities to have their accounts “stamped out”.
Speaking earlier this month, Professor Stephen Powis, national medical director of NHS said: “Where celebrities and the platforms which promote them exploit this vulnerability by pushing products like laxative teas, diet pills and other get-thin-quick solutions, they are taking the health of our young people in their hands and should act with far greater responsibility.
