The victim, named locally as Alwi Jamal, was pronounced dead at the scene about half an hour later.

Zamirullah Stanikzai, 21, who works in a phone shop close to where the attack took place, said he saw two men brandishing knives.

He said: "I saw people running up and down the station when I went out."

A local said: "A fight happened outside Paddy Power, I was there when it happened. Alwi was slashed in the face - then they chased him towards the station.

"They chased after him, two people with knives - zombie knives black with a silver blade. They stabbed him in his chest."

Another said: "He was run up on near the station and stabbed. It was in the chest, one time, close to where his arm started.";

Ilford South MP Mike Gapes tweeted that he was "shocked and saddened" by the killing.

The Met said a murder probe had been opened, while no arrests had yet been made.

A spokesman for Scotland Yard said: "Urgent enquiries are underway to establish the circumstances."

The 20-year-old man was the sixth person killed in London in just nine days after a man was stabbed to death in Bethnal Green on Monday.

TUESDAY BLOODSHED

Tuesday in the capital got off to a bloody start when a 25-year-old man was left critically injured in a stabbing in Enfield, North London.

Police were called to Green Street at 12.40am and the man was taken to hospital for treatment, while three men - aged 24, 26 and 27 - were arrested at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

Officers responded to another incident in Enfield on Tuesday afternoon where a man in his 30s was stabbed in the thigh following an "altercation" on Parsonage Road at around 1.50pm.

The man was later discharged from hospital, while a man arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm was taken into custody.

A few hours later a male, reported to be a teenager, was stabbed at South Ruislip Underground in west London.

British Transport Police said it was called to reports of a disturbance at the station shortly before 4.30pm.

He was seen by horrified witnesses "laying face down" on the ground in his school uniform but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Around two hours later police were called to a stabbing in Romford, east London.

An 18-year-old man was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

17 MURDER PROBES IN 2019

The fatal stabbing on Tuesday night meant there have now been 17 murder probes launched in the capital this year after 2018's bloodshed caused the highest London murder rate for a decade.

On Friday night a 19-year-old was fatally shot and stabbed by a gang wielding knives, guns and a samurai sword in Wood Green, in North London.

The night before, Glendon Spence, 23, was fatally stabbed at a youth club in Brixton, in South London.

A 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared at Bromley Youth Court yesterday charged with murder.

Glendon had been playing table tennis at Marcus Lipton youth centre, which was the venue for a police anti-knife crime summit last year, when he was attacked.

Last Monday night Bright Akinleye, 22, was stabbed in a street near Euston station before staggering into a hotel lobby where he collapsed and died.

The following day 69-year-old Brian Wieland died in a fire at a house in Chingford, East London. A woman, 51, has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Knife crime and shootings are on the rise fuelled by gang rivalry and disputes over drug markets.

Last year's homicide rate in the capital was the highest in a decade, with 132 violent deaths in London.
