THE chilling reality of the -60C polar vortex gripping the US has been captured in a gallery of pictures.

From exploding ice box toilets to frozen trouser sculptures, shivering Americans have been sharing bizarre scenarios to show just how cold it really is.

The US Midwest is in the midst of one of the most dangerous cold snaps to date, with freezing air blasting through the Dakotas, Chicago, Illinois and New England.

Some regions have endured temperatures colder than Antarctica - as these social media photos attest.

One picture illustrates how the extreme weather even caused Antifreeze to freeze. Another resident hoping for a tipple to warm them up was shocked to find his vodka had solidified.
