Shoplifting and pickpocketing climbed 2.7 per cent in 2017. And 2018 data from 27 of 43 forces in England and Wales shows there were 46,973 shoplifting crimes plus 1,659 thefts from people by autumn.
The British Retail Consortium’s James Martin said: “Costs are borne by shoppers and those who rely on retail for their livelihoods.”
The Police Federation’s John Apter said: “As forces struggle to meet 999 call demand, incidents such as these are increasingly likely not to be attended by officers.
“They may not be considered the most serious of offences but it is important those responsible are not allowed to do as they wish without the fear of being caught.”
