SHAMELESS

Man, 67, who started ‘inappropriately masturbating’ in front of family had suffered ‘silent’ stroke

The stroke affected the front of his brain, but he recovered quickly in hospital - and never found out about his embarrassing behaviour

A MAN who began "masturbating inappropriately" was taken to hospital only for doctors to discover his lewd behaviour was a sign of a "silent" stroke.

The 67-year-old started shamelessly pleasuring himself in front of his horrified family.

The unnamed name also started using foul language and started "using inappropriate sexual words when addressing his relatives".

"His wife said he showed inappropriate sexual behaviour, such as masturbation without shame when she was present," Dr Rafael Garcia Carretero said in a BMJ Case Report.

"He showed no concern regarding these changes (in behaviour)."

'Severe personality changes'

Concerned at the man's "severe personality changes", his family took him to hospital in Mostoles, near Madrid, Spain.

Doctors examining him discovered he had high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes, and his heart and lungs appeared normal.

They tested his brain function and did not note any abnormalities.

Doctors ordered chest X-rays, which came back normal and a CT of the man's brain.

Scans showed a silent stroke

The CT scan showed a shadow at the front of the brain, in the frontal lobe.

Worried it could be a brain tumour, the team sent their patient for an MRI scan.

That revealed the 67-year-old had suffered a "silent stroke", which tend to hit with no warning signs.

After treatment the man made a full recovery.

'He was never aware of his behaviour'

Dr Carretero and his team said: "His relatives said he once again became nice, judicious, prudent, thoughtful and well-mannered.

"Generally he continued to be the person he was before the stroke."

But, they added: "The man was never aware of his changes and his family said he had problems interpreting others' moods."

Know the signs of a stroke and Act FAST - dial 999

There are two common types of stroke.

The first is haemorrhagic, where the damage is caused by a bleed in the brain.

While the second - an ischaemic stroke - happens when a blood vessel supplying the brain with oxygenated blood gets blocked, therefore cutting off the blood supply to a part of the brain.

Strokes can be deadly or cause severe disability if they are not treated very quickly - hence the call to Act FAST:

  • Face - can they smile? Does one side of their face droop?
  • Arm - can they lift both arms? Is one side weak?
  • Speech - is their speech slurred or muddled?
  • Time - if you spot these signs it's time to call 999.

Meanwhile, a "silent" stroke is slightly different - mainly in the sense it rarely has symptoms.

Often people will suffer a silent stroke without realising it, but they will suffer permanent brain damage.

Those people who have more than one silent stroke are at greater risk of suffering a more severe brain bleed or blockage.
