Who is Lord Digby Jones and what has he said about Brexit?

The former CBI boss is an avowed Brexiteer who is calling for the Tory government, the political class and established elite to get on with leaving the EU

BREXITEER Lord Digby-Jones is famed his claim that “not a single job” would be lost because of Brexit that he made in the run-up to the referendum.

But the peer and ex Minister of State for Trade and Investment from 2007 to 2008 firmly stands by the claim.

Who is Lord Digby-Jones?

Lord Digby Jones is a 68-year-old author, broadcaster and a non-aligned member of the House of Lords.

He is a former Director-General of the CBI and was selected as a non-party aligned government minister for UK Trade and Investment because of his business experience.

Born in Birmingham in 1955 to a modest background, he won a scholarship to Bromsgrove School.

While serving in the Royal Navy as a sub-lieutenant he read law at University College London before working for 20 years at Edge & Ellison.

What has Lord Digby-Jones said about Brexit?

Lord Digby-Jones is an avowed Brexiteer.

He has stood by his claim that “not a single job” would be lost due to Brexit which he made in the run-up to the 2016 referendum.

The former CBI boss told BBC 5 Live that a lack of investment by firms in the UK is not because of Brexit but “the uncertainty created by 650 people in the House of Commons, who are, fundamentally, as a political class, letting down the United Kingdom”.

In a comment piece for The Sun, Lord Digby-Jones called on the Tories to get on with Brexit because a greater threat is looming — a hard left Jeremy Corbyn Labour Government.

He said: “The British people — as if they needed further confirmation after what has gone on over the past few months — have been let down by the political class and the establishment elite.

“The Tories are torn apart by ideology.

“The party’s historically masterful, pragmatic ability to compromise has disappeared on the one hand and naked political ambition is very evident on the other.

“Labour has shown total disregard for everyone. Securing a general election is the only thing that matters to them.”
