A GUNMAN opened fire on the streets of Corsica killing one and injuring five others in a bloody rampage before taking his own life, cops said.
The lone shooter, named in local reports as 66-year-old Joseph Orsoni, reportedly shot himself in the head after attempting to negotiate with police.
Prosecutors have claimed that Orsoni may have targeted his neighbours in the deadly shooting following a bitter five-year row over a dog.
The gunman was no stranger to Corsica's courts, having two previous convictions for armed offences.
Bastia's prosecutor Caroline Tharot told Ouest France that Orsoni’s dog may have bitten one of his neighbours friends.
"A dispute allegedly pitted the defendant, Joseph Orsoni, against one of his neighbours, a dispute that dates back five or six years to a dog.
“It looks like Orsoni's dog has bitten this neighbour's friend."
She claimed that Orsoni slashed this 23-year-old neighbour with a knife in the stomach and arm before also attacking the man's wife.
The attacker is then said to have opened fire on several other people with his shotguns, one of whom was a cop.
Police surrounded the home of the shooter on Wednesday night after he took two hostages into a house in the city of Bastia on the French island.
France's Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said the man's body was found after a police raid.
"The suspect has ended his life by shooting himself in the head," prosecutor Tharot said.
The gunman is reported to have opened fire in the street before locking himself inside a house with two hostages and later killing himself.
Ms Tharot told reporters the suspect had two previous convictions for armed offences.
Giles Mineoni, president of the Corsica Assembly said in a tweet the individual who died was a public housing official.
A police officer and three other women are among the injured according to .
The police officer is said to have been shot in the neck.
The incident began in the Montesoro neighborhood at 4.35pm local time (15.45 GMT).
Police attended the scene as well fire services from the Haute-Corse region.
The injured were taken to hospital to be treated.
