Piers Morgan says Sir Winston Churchill-hating MSP would be ‘speaking German and goose-stepping’ if it wasn’t for wartime PM in fiery GMB clash

Piers Morgan clashed with MSP Ross Greer today after the Green Party politician called Churchill a 'white supremacist mass murderer'

PIERS Morgan clashed angrily with a Green MSP who described Sir Winston Churchill as a “white supremacist mass murderer” saying if it wasn’t for the wartime PM he would be “speaking German and goose-stepping his way to Holyrood”.

Describing Ross Greer as a “nasty, smearing, derogatory young man” in a heated debate today Morgan snapped: “You are saying the man who saved us from the Nazis is no better than a Nazi himself.”

Ross Greer stood by his claims that Sir Winston Churchill was a ‘white supremacist and mass murderer’

The debate started when Greer reacted to a Tory Party tweet this week marking 54 years since Churchill’s death aged 90.

The post described Churchill as a man regarded by many as the “greatest Briton to have ever lived”.

But Greer, who three years ago became the youngest person to be elected to the Scottish Parliament, branded Churchill a “white supremacist mass murderer”.

Defending his post on ITV’s Good Morning Britain today Greer said Churchill was a “racist because he hated Indians with a passion and branded them a beastly people with a beastly religion”.

He also claimed the former PM “advocated using poison gas against uncivilised tribes in Africa” as well as using hateful rhetoric against people in Afghanistan and Kurdistan.

But when he accused Churchill of being “responsible for the Bengali famine of 1943”, Morgan shot back and explained how he urged leaders from across the world to help the Bengalis.

What is funny about your attempts to smear the reputation of a great leader?

He said: “What you’re saying isn’t just offensive, it’s a downright lie. I get enraged by this, because if it wasn’t for Winston Churchill you would be speaking German and goose-stepping your way to Holyrood.”

He went on: “What you’ve failed to do is offer any perspective…your sneering tweet besmirched Churchill.

“He was the Prime Minister that led to this country standing up and saving itself from Hitler and the Nazis.”

Morgan also pointed out how, in 2002, Sir Winston was voted our greatest ever Brit after leading the nation to World War Two victory.

As Greer smirked at Morgan’s response, the former Daily Mirror editor snapped: “What is funny about any of this? What is funny about your attempts to smear the reputation of a great leader like Winston Churchill?

“Why do you get a kick out of this? Why do you not have any sense of honour about you which allows you to offer even a semblance of balance?”

Greer explained how he “almost didn’t exist at all” because of Churchill.

He said: “Because of Churchill’s hatred for the workers on the Clyde and his refusal to properly defend the Clyde, my Gran was almost killed in the Clydebank Blitz.”

The Green MSP accused Morgan of being easily offended, saying: “We’re unable to talk about this without people like you, Piers, having a tantrum…it’s very snowflake of you.”

Morgan replied: “He almost single handedly dragged this country from the abyss in World War Two.

“It’s absolutely disgusting. You are saying the man who saved us from the Nazis is actually no better than a Nazi himself.

“You want the world to think you believe he was no better than a Nazi.”

Morgan finished by saying: “I find you revolting. What you have said about Winston Churchill and your sneering, smirking performance today as you denigrate this great national icon…I find you revolting and you offensive. It makes me sick to my stomach.”
