SCOTTISH chef Andrew Fairlie has died aged 55 following a long illness.
The chef, who ran the only restaurant in Scotland with two Michelin stars, had a brain tumour.
Andrew Fairlie was born in Perth, Scotland and began training to be a chef under Chef Keith Podmore.
When he was 20 he was awarded the first Roux Scholarship, giving him an opportunity to train under French chef Michel Guerard in France.
When Fairlie came back he opened Restaurant Andrew Fairlie, which is an independent eatery in the Gleneagles Hotel and Resort in Auchterarder, Perthshire, in 2001 and it earned its first Michelin star within one year after opening.
It is the only two-Michelin star restaurant in Scotland and one of 15 in the UK.
In 2002 he became the Scottish Chef of the Year and in 2008 he cooked for the Queen at the G8 Summit.
In 2011 he was named Relais & Chateaux Grand Chef du Monde, which is one of just seven in the UK.
Fairlie never competed on MasterChef, but his restaurant hosted a semi-final heat in his restaurant on MasterChef: The Professionals.
Two contestants were sent to Fairlie’s restaurant to cook alongside him.
They worked during a busy dinner service and the episode aired in December 2011 on BBC Two.
At the time : “As a fan and supporter of MasterChef it was great to be involved and hold the semi-final heat in my restaurant.
"I was hugely impressed by the calibre of the two contestants, who both clearly enjoyed cooking with the exceptional produce that we have unrivalled access to here in the middle of Scotland.
"I think MasterChef: The Professionals plays a hugely positive role in our industry, and I wish both contestants every success.”
Fairlie died on January 22 after a long battle with cancer after it was discovered he had a brain tumour.
He was diagnosed in 2005 and in June 2018 doctors said there was no further treatment available.
In November 2018, he stepped down from his restaurant.
A private funeral will take place and a memorial service will be held at the hotel later this year.
paid tribute and said Fairlie's legacy "will inspire the next generation of world class chefs."
His father Jim announced his death on Twitter and said that his son’s “many achievements and memory will live on”.
He wrote: “It is with enormous sadness and grief that Kay and I announce the death of our beloved son Andrew. His wife Kate and his family have kept vigil with him for some weeks. He slipped away quietly this morning but his many achievements & memory will live on.”
