Speaker John Bercow ‘seriously reflecting’ whether to quit after reports he may be denied a peerage
The Speaker said he had expected to stay until after Brexit, but friends have said he was angry over what he thought was an attempt to bully him
JOHN Bercow is now “seriously reflecting” whether to stay on longer as expected after reports the Government could deny him a peerage.
The controversial Commons Speaker was previously expected to stay in his post until after Brexit, despite once promising to quit last year.
But friends said this weekend he was seriously annoyed over what he thought was an attempt to bully him.
Last week he made international headlines after selecting an amendment to the EU Withdrawal Bill against the advice of his Clerks and procedure.
Continental media named him their “European of the Week” over his attempts to “thwart” Government strategy over Brexit.
His move resulted in Theresa May being forced to lay out her alternative Brexit plan B within three sitting days of her agreement being defeated.
Then he failed to select an amendment favoured by Brexiteers which if supported would have put a time limit on the Irish backstop.
But Mr Bercow also faces the threat of being thrown out of Parliament.
The Sun revealed last week that his Buckingham Tory Association were looking for a suitable figure to replace him to fight the seat.
