Cabinet ministers warn a snap General Election could be called as soon as February

Downing Street officially deny a General Election is coming but cabinet insiders warn Theresa May is 'running out of road'

ANOTHER General Election is “inevitable” Cabinet Ministers warned  – amid rumours a poll is earmarked for February 28.

One Tory told The Sun they believed Theresa May would have to go back to the nation as she was “running out of road”.

They claimed an updated version of her Brexit deal would form the core of the Election manifesto – with voters told to choose between this or two more years of EU negotiations under Jeremy Corbyn.

Another Cabinet source said an Election “once unthinkable, is now a very likely option.

"It’s all everyone’s talking about.”

Downing Street yesterday attempted to rubbish the claims.

Challenged whether she could rule out the idea of a snap election, the PM’s official spokeswoman replied: “Yes”.

But it followed reports Britain’s top civil servant, Cabinet Secretary Mark Sedwill, was meeting senior mandarins to discuss preparations in case the PM decides to go to the country.

And separately yesterday it was claimed three Cabinet Ministers had told their local parties to prepare for an Election. Leftie mag New Statesman claimed four Ministers have named February 28 as the date.

An end of February poll would come four weeks after the Commons is due to vote on Theresa May’s Plan B, alternative Brexit plans and a second referendum, in a huge showdown on January 29.

Theresa May threw away the Conservatives majority in a snap election in 2017 despite at one point holding a 20 point lead over Labour.

She would need two-thirds of MPs to vote for an Election under the Fixed Term Parliament Act. But one MP said: “I think they could hit that number if there’s no other way through.”

One Minister told The Sun: “Theresa feels she owes it to the party to make up for 2017. I can see another Election taking place if nothing else is decided.”

But one arch Eurosceptic Tory said they believed talk of an Election was a fresh attempt to “frighten” Brexiteers into backing Theresa May’s deal.

“This is just another attempt at Project Fear,” they said.
