An army of builders with concrete mixers is already on site in the grounds of Windsor Castle, readying it for its new royal residents later this year.

The bulk of the bill to turn the current five flats into one home for the couple and their baby — due in the spring — is being met by the taxpayer-funded Sovereign Grant.

Other renovations of the Grade II-listed property, which have been revealed in planning documents published by the local council, include a satellite dish outside.

A local historian, who asked not to be named, said: “Oh dear, a satellite dish. It’s not quite right.

The cottage, which has been gifted to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex by the Queen, has a rich history stretching back 200 years.

It was originally known as Double Garden Cottage but its name was changed in 1875 after Queen Victoria had breakfast there.

She noted an “immense number of little frogs” which she found “quite disgusting” — adding in a letter that they made the “grass look as if it were alive”.
