Mum’s warning after finding ‘large chunks of MOULD’ in her baby’s Robinson’s Fruit Shoot drink
Tot Nevaeh ended up in A&E struggling to breathe - and her mum claims she became ill after drinking from the bottle with 'lumps of mould' inside
A MUM has sent a warning to other parents after she allegedly found chunks of mould in her daughter’s Robinson’s Fruit Shoot drink.
Fiona Kenny, 32 from East London, decided to check the bottles she gives daughter Nevaeh after the 18-month-old became poorly.
She had been suffering from symptoms consistent with a viral infection but a fortnight ago she was struggling to breathe and ended up in A&E.
One afternoon the toddler couldn’t get the peach and mango Fruit Shoot out of the bottle and Miss Kenny realised something was wrong. She unscrewed the top and saw several large chunks of mould that could clearly be seen when she tipped them into a container.
She claims that when she held the bottle to the light she could see further chunks attached to the inside of the bottle. Now she says other parents should be warned because she truly believes the mould made her little girl sick.
Fiona said: “I’ll never buy it again. She’d been ill for a couple of weeks. I’d taken her to the doctor three times about it. They just kept saying it was a viral infection."
She continued: "I sterilised all her bottles to try and stop it, but then she got so bad she was rushed into hospital by ambulance. She was struggling to breathe, she wasn’t herself and she had diarrhoea.”
Nevaeh was given antibiotics at the Queen’s Hospital in Romford, east London, and has slowly recovered - even though mould is fungal.
She continued: “She doesn’t eat outside and when we’re home she drinks water or squash. I hadn’t been ill so I couldn’t think what was causing it. The only thing I hadn’t looked at was the Fruit Shoot, and she’s the only one that has it.
“Lumps of mould were coming out of it. It made me feel like I’d poisoned my child. You buy these things that are made for kids thinking they’ll be OK and obviously I need to be more careful," she said.
Miss Kenny says she believes it may be a design problem with the opening of the bottles and says makers Britvic should consider returning to the old screw caps.
She claimed: “It’s not a single batch, it’s the design. You can actually see the mould inside the bottle when you hold it to the light.”
Britvic have been sent the bottle and are going to analyse it along with the mould.
A Britvic spokesperson said the company is investigating, adding: “The quality of our products is of the utmost importance to Britvic, and any indication that our high standards have not been met is taken extremely seriously.
“Producing quality products from brands that our consumers trust is the core purpose of our business and we are sorry that it appears our usual high standards have not been met on this occasion.
“We have initiated a full and thorough investigation to establish exactly what happened.”
