SAJID Javid has taken a swipe at Boris Johnson by calling for the next Tory leader to be someone who DIDN'T go to Oxford or a posh private school.

Allies of the Home Secretary said the party needed to move on and pick someone who was actually representative of Britain.

The comments will be seen as a huge rebuke to ex-Foreign Secretary Boris and other Tory leadership rivals - most of whom went to top universities and private schools like Eton before they entered politics.

Contenders are jostling around preparing for a possible leadership challenge within months.

An ally of the Home Secretary told "We have to break the stranglehold of public schoolboy, Oxbridge-educated, as the default option for who runs the party. After Theresa has gone, we can’t go back to that ridiculous, outdated approach.

"It’s time the Tories moved on and picked someone who is just more representative of modern-day Britain as a whole."

The ally's comments hint that Tories should get behind Mr Javid when the time comes to pick the new leader.

But any contest is not set for some time now after Mrs May won a leadership challenge at the end of December.

MPs voted to support her as PM for now - and that means rebels can't challenge her again for another year.

Mr Javid, the Home Secretary, is the son of an Asian bus driver, and had a career in the City before becoming an MP.

His dad Abdul arrived in the UK form Pakistan with just £1 in his pocket and worked in a shop and factory to provide for his family.

Mr Javid attended a comprehensive school, and has told of how he was targeted by racist bullies as a kid.

He went on to study politics and economics at Exeter University - unlike Boris Johnson who went to Eton before going on to Oxford.
