A NURSE who stumbled into a hospital with a knife in her has been arrested for allegedly faking the attack.

Donna Maxwell, 42, sparked a major police investigation after she reportedly claimed to have been attacked at Ailsa Hospital, in Ayr, Scotland on November 22.

But Maxwell was yesterday arrested, three weeks after the alleged attack.

She has been accused of knifing herself in the abdomen before claiming she had been ambushed in the hospital car park.

The claims put the the area into lock down for three hours by cops, with fears a knifeman was on the loose.

She was rushed to the nearby Ayr Hospital with docs saying she was "lucky to be alive";.

As part of the huge police operation, staff and pupils were also locked in at nearby Queen Margaret Academy.

Locals also spoke out, saying they feared for their safety as the major probe was launched into the alleged attack.

Maxwell herself spent two days in hospital receiving treatment for the serious knife wounds.

Maxwell is now expected in court tomorrow.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We can confirm that a 42-year-old woman has been arrested and charged in connection with an incident at Ailsa Hospital, Dalmellington Road, Ayr which occurred shortly after 10.00am on Thursday, 22 November 2018."

The incident was also raised during First Minister’s Questions.

Nicola Sturgeon told MSPs: “The safety of staff and patients is of the utmost importance.”

Maxwell had been treated at Ayr Hospital with her husband Thomas, 46, saying she was on the road to recovery.

He said: “She has been through a lot but she’s doing great. She’s on the mend but there’s still a lot she has to process.”
