THE dead body of a newborn baby has been found dumped on a beach in Ireland.
Cops launched an investigation after the tot was discovered on the coast at Balbriggan, near Dublin.
Officers are appealing for the baby’s mum to come forward as they have concerns about her wellbeing.
The sex of the baby is currently still unknown.
Irish cops have cordoned off the scene on the beach and have asked anyone with information to get in touch.
Making a direct appeal to the mum, Sergeant Fiona Savidge said: “I want to get in touch with the mother of this baby. I am reaching out to you.
“I know you need medical attention. You need to go to your doctor. Possibly a 24-hour doctor on call. If you could also go to an Accident and Emergency, 24-hour care is available there.
“We are here at Balbriggan Garda station on 01 666 4500. Any Garda station or Tusla can be contacted 24-hours a day on 081 877 6315.
“I can assure you, you will be treated with the utmost of compassion and care and 100 per cent confidentiality.
“I know you are a daughter. I know you are possibly a sister, a cousin. You may have a husband, a boyfriend. You may have confided in a friend.
“So to anyone out there that the mother of this baby has got in touch with I am appealing to you to make contact with us.”
Speaking alongside Eilidh MacNab, from the Child and Family Agency Tusla, cops confirmed the baby was white and at most was just days old.
But they couldn’t say whether the mum had given birth on the beach, which is surrounded by cliffs and only accessible by a single-lane path.
They said it was most likely the newborn was placed on the beach and not washed onto it.
Superintendent Liam Geraghty added: “We don’t know the sex of the baby based on the position it was left in on the beach . . . it is a very, very newborn baby. We’re making an appeal for the mother in this case.
“That lady that’s out there — be it a girl or woman — is in a tragic circumstance and we really need to try and look after her at this stage.
“We are contacting all doctors and hospitals at the moment trying to find out if somebody has presented in that medical condition.”
The remains have been removed to Temple Street Hospital. They will then go to the City Morgue pending a postmortem either today or tomorrow, which will determine the exact age and gender.
Cops do not believe the youngster was ever submerged in the water.
The partially-buried body was discovered by a beach-cleaning volunteer.
She is being supported by special officers.
