'WHOSE CHILD IS NEXT?'

How 2018 saw London’s streets run red with blood in devastating orgy of violence that saw 132 people murdered – the highest rate for 10 YEARS

Knife crime and shootings are on the rise in London as cops have struggled to contain the violence

MONDAY April 2 is a day that Mohammed Shakoor will never forget.

One minute he was watching TV at home, and the next he received a call that would change his life forever.

Amaan Shakoor was shot in the head in Walthamstow on April 2 and died the next day in hospital

His 16-year-old son Amaan had been shot dead by two hooded men outside a leisure centre in East London.

In that moment, Mohammed and his family had become the latest victim of the violence that’s rocked the capital this year.

“You are never prepared for something like this”, he said.

“I will never forget hearing those words ‘Amaan has been shot’ for as long as I live.

“I find it hard to remember a lot after that, it all seemed to happen so quickly.

“Going to the scene, being at the hospital, talking to the doctors…being told there was no hope, being told that my beautiful son was surely going to die.”

Amaan, the youngest of four siblings, had popped out to visit friends after a family meal at his Walthamstow home on that Monday.

The 16-year-old, who was studying for his GCSEs at Kelmscott School, was standing outside the Walthamstow Leisure Centre at around 10pm when he was shot in the face. He died the next day in hospital.

His killer is still at large.

Amaan was killed on the same night as 17-year-old Tanesha Melbourne was shot dead just three miles away in Tottenham.

His murder was one of 132 violent deaths in London this year, the highest number since 2009.

Knife crime and shootings are on the rise as cops have struggled to contain the violence.

Speaking to the Sun Online Mohammed said: “On the streets there’s violence every single day, you see police cars rushing up and down all the time.

“You just think ‘whose child is it next?’

“You’d never hear about this kind of violence in the past but guns and knives are just normal now. Where do they get them from? How can that happen?

“There needs to be more policing. I think the police should do more stop and search because these individuals are carrying weapons.”

The 49-year-old said his family had been handed a “life sentence” due to the “senseless” murder of his beloved son.

He said: “Any parent will tell you it’s difficult to move on from this.

“It’s a big change in your life. It’s virtually impossible to move on from here but we’re trying one day at a time.

“Our lives have been totally changed for ever by those individuals who had no regard for life and the devastating impact it would have.

“Amaan was a wonderful son. He was quiet boy and kind-hearted. He was just a normal teenager who liked films and meeting his friends. He had so much to live for.”

There have been 73 deaths involving a knife, 13 involving a gun and one a crossbow.

There was a spike in violent crime in February and March, where 18 homicides were recorded each month.

These were the second highest monthly totals recorded since April 2010 and saw London’s murder rate overtake that of New York.

In September the Metropolitan Police recorded its 100th murder – at an earlier point in the year than at any time since 2008.

Then, in just six days from Halloween to Bonfire Night, there were five fatal stabbings in London.

Three of those victims were schoolchildren; Jay Hughes, 15, John Ogunjobi, 16, and 17-year-old Malcolm Mide-Madariola, who was slashed to death outside Clapham South station in broad daylight.

That fresh round of killings led the Mayor of London to declare it could take a “decade” to turn the tide of violent crime.

Earlier this month he announced he would increase council tax for Londoners by the maximum amount within his power to tackle knife crime.

Families who moved to London in search of a better life have been ripped apart.

On one horrifying night in February two Somali youths were murdered – less than a mile apart.

Abdikarim Hassan, a keen footballer, was stabbed to death outside a corner shop in Camden.

His aunt, Fatima, said: “His mum said she came here for their safety, to flee from civil war but here is where he lost his life.”

Just two hours later, aspiring accountant Sadiq Aadam Mohamed, was murdered in Mornington Crescent.

“If you lose a child, it’s a dark day”, his devastated mum Fowsiya Abdi said.

A month later Beniamin Piekyni, 21, was brutally stabbed to death just three weeks after moving to Britain from Romania.

He was knifed in the chest by a five-strong gang in an unprovoked attack while strolling through the Stratford Centre in east London with a friend.

Fearful of life in Lawless London, Beniamin’s heartbroken family returned to Romania.

Speaking after five men were jailed over the attack in November, Beniamin’s sister Iulia said: “I’ve come to realise that terrible things can happen [in London] in the blink of an eye, and if you say the wrong thing to the wrong person you could end up dead”.

Patrick Green, who heads up the charity set up after the 2008 killing of 16-year-old Ben Kinsella, said: “Unfortunately this is something you can't turn around particularly quickly.

“It takes time for people to change their mind-sets, it takes time for us to change those views and it takes time for the money to work – that is why we will see this problem get worse before it gets better.”

Ex-gang member Jermaine Lawlor, who now runs Voice 4 Youth Against Violence, told the Sun Online "100 per cent the violence will get worse next year."

The number of homicides in London so far in 2018 is the highest in a calendar year this decade

One of the reasons why violence in the capital has spread is because of the brutal “county lines trade” where urban dealers force children and other vulnerable people to take drugs to customers in more rural areas.

The National Crime Agency estimate there are more than 1,000 “county lines” in operation – a 40 per cent rise in just one year – raking in an estimated £1.8billion annual profit.

Each county lines route is making as much as £5,000 a day - £7million between them all.

The county lines gangs regularly entice boys, largely from broken homes, into a life of crime with promises of money, kudos and a sense of belonging often lacking in their troubled home lives.

In London itself, gang warfare is increasingly being driven by a ruthless battle to control the drugs market in a move away from “postcode wars”.

A chilling report focused on a Waltham Forest gang – called the Mali boys – described how their focus had shifted “from postcodes to profit”.

Jay Hughes was stabbed to death outside a fast food takeaway 100 yards from his home in South East London

One expert said the Somali gang, operating in the north-east of London, was “business driven, violent and ruthless”.

He added: “It’s almost like a franchise, like McDonald’s or Benetton where the Mali Boys have got a very effective pyramid structure, business plan, but instead of burgers and woolly jumper it’s Class A drugs and cannabis.”

The gang use old fashioned Nokia phones because they are less easy to track and are estimated to be making as much a £50,000 a week in profits from drug sales.

In total there are estimated to be around 250 gangs in London involving around 4,500 people.

Gavin Hales, a criminologist and former consultant for the Metropolitan police, explained how gangs offered those with poor qualifications instant cash, status and belonging, as well as a sense of family.

“There are very low entry costs – it’s cash in hand. There’s a seduction about it because it’s ready money”, he said.

Met boss, Cressida Dick, and Home Secretary, Sajid Javid, are locked in a war of words over knife crime in BritainCredit: PA:Press Association

Middle class cocaine users have come under fire for helping to fuel this increasingly violent battle in Lawless London.

Cressida Dick, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said the growing demand from well-off users for the Class A drug was leading to a surge in violent gang crime.

She said: “There's this challenge that there's a whole group of middle class people who will sit round happily talking about global warming, fair trade, environmental protection and organic farming, but think there's no harm in taking a bit of cocaine.

“Well, there is. There is misery throughout the supply chain.”

Justice Secretary David Gauke echoed Ms Dick’s concerns, saying middle-class people who used cocaine “should feel a degree of guilt and responsibility” when they saw stories of teenagers being murdered in Hackney.

And just last week the Lord Chief Justice said wealthy drug users should consider the “huge social damage” linked to their actions.

Drill music, where rappers taunt and threaten rivals, and the role of social media in escalating disputes has become an increasing concern for cops this year.

Supporters of drill – originally a Chicago slang term for shooting – insist it’s an important way for young people, particularly those from tough backgrounds, to express themselves.

But police claim the genre is escalating gang-on-gang violence in the capital.

Jermaine Goupall, 15, was stabbed by thugs who wrongly believed he was in a rival outfit - another victim of drill music that is fuelling killings and violence across London

Jermaine’s killer was prominent drill 'artist' M-Trap 0 — aka 17-year-old Junior Simpson — who made videos in which he rapped about carrying out knife attacks like the one that killed Jermaine last summer

Gangs often use the musical style to threaten rivals but, this year, the violence has increasingly spilled out on to the streets.

Ms Dick said: “Drill music is associated with lyrics which are about glamourising violence, serious violence — murder, stabbings — they describe the stabbings in great detail, with great joy and excitement.

“Often we have gangs who make drill videos and in them say what they are going to do to each other, and specifically what they are going to do to who.”

The force has become so concerned about the ominous trend it has asked YouTube to pull down more than 50 videos. It has agreed to remove around 30.

A judge spoke of drill’s “malign influence” in March when he jailed four teenagers for a total of 85 years over the murder of Mahamed Hassan, 17, who was stabbed in Battersea, South West London, in April last year.

Similarly, Judge Nicholas Cooke, QC, said Devone Pusey, 20, and Kai Stewart, 18, were “fuelled by musical taunts online” before killing Dean Pascal-Modeste in February 2017. They were jailed for a total of 37 years.

Marcel Addai's death in 2015 was one of the first in the capital that was linked to drill.

His gran June, 66, told the Sun Online: “This taunting each other and violence when artists say ‘I’m going to come down and shoot you, I’m going to cut you’ why are they doing this? Why? Why? They take the videos down but they just go back up again.

“It’s too violent, it has to stop. It needs to stop because too many people are losing their lives. All the families are ripped apart and you feel like there’s a big void in your life. It’s too much.

Marcel Addai, 18, was stabbed to death by thugs who were jailed for a total of 96 years

Marcel’s uncle Sebastian, 34, added: “Nothing has been learned from Marcel’s death. The circles are repeating again. The music to them is saying ‘do this, do that’ and then they’re going out and doing it. It’s only getting worse.”

Stanley Goupall's 15-year-old son, Jermaine, was killed by drill artist M-Trap 0 — aka 17-year-old Junior Simpson — who made videos in which he rapped about carrying out knife attacks like the one that killed Jermaine last summer.

He’s convinced his son “would still be here” if it were not for drill.

The 51-year-old said: “The mindset behind the music is demonic in places. The beat was inside their heads, it was like rehearsing the actions they needed to do.”

Meanwhile campaign groups said cuts to youth facilities has left disillusioned kids with nowhere to hang out, while cuts to front-line policing has seen the number of bobbies on the beat tumble.

Scotland Yard has seen its annual budget slashed by about 20 per cent since 2011, and it has lost 10 per cent of its cop in that time.

Over the last seven years 81 youth clubs and council youth projects have shut while almost £40million has been cut from youth services.

Junior Smart, a former drug dealer for several gangs in south London, said the area’s network of “safe haven” for youngsters had disappeared.

It’s been reported that youths are even now wearing stab vests, highlighting the level of fear they face.

Smart, who was jailed for 12 years in his mid-20s after being caught in possession of several kilos of crack, said: “At one youth club in south London we had 120 kids every night– it was oversubscribed. Now they end up on the estates.”

Nequela Whittaker, a youth worker, who used to be a gang leader in south London, told the BBC: "Due to spending cuts there has been less policing, community centres are closing.

“There's not been money directed at the third sector for a while and with all these cuts and reductions we've got more young people falling out on to the streets.”

She added: “Young people don’t feel like they fit in with society and there doesn’t seem to be a voice for young people so there’s a bit of carnage.”
