Syrian refugee, 15, ‘waterboarded by bully’ asks public not to hurt his attacker after teen recieves online abuse
Jamal's 16-year-old attacker has been a target since a horrific video showed the Syrian refugee being bullied in a field
THE Syrian refugee "waterboarded by a school bully" has asked the public not to hurt his attacker as the teen has received a wave of online abuse.
Horrific footage showed Jamal, 15, being attacked and threatened with drowning at his school in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, provoking a flood of sympathy.
But the alleged 16-year-old attacker has since received a torrent of abuse, after the video was shared online.
Jamal has said he is concerned about his attacker, hoping nothing "terrible" happens to him.
He told The Guardian: "I am very concerned about the violent comments going out on social media about the bully.
"I don’t want anything terrible to happen to him at all. I just don’t want anything bad to happen to anyone."
The generous public response to a bullied Syrian schoolboy has shown the "true spirit of Britain", Prime Minister Theresa May has said.
Mrs May described the attack on the 15-year-old refugee as "absolutely terrible" and said her thoughts were with him.
Brits were outraged when footage of Jamal being assaulted emerged on Twitter.
The clip, shared tens of thousands of times, shows the 15-year-old victim with his arm in a cast being dragged to the floor by his neck as his attacker says "I'll drown you", on a school playing field.
The teen then pours a bottle of water in Jamal's face while others watch and cheer.
Earlier this week, Kirklees councillor Bernard McGuin said Jamal had beeged for help, three weeks before the incident.
In one email from Jamal, titled "please help me", the teen described a series of disturbing incidents including being doused with water, having his hair set on fire and verbal abuse.
Cllr McGuin said: "He gave me a catalogue of assaults that had happened to him.
"He lists reoccurring bullying, verbal, physical and psychological abuse from a group of pupils. His arm was broken and he went to hospital.
“He lists a number of incidents and names a number of people. About five or six incidents - throwing water at him, swearing, throwing an egg at him, setting his hair on fire.
"In the email he says 'on a number of occasions I have observed my abusers laughing and recording me on their smartphones without my permission'."
West Yorkshire Police confirmed a 16-year-old boy is set to be charged with assault over the ‘waterboarding’ incident.
A spokesman said: "A 16-year-old youth has been interviewed and reported for summons, for an offence of assault. He will appear at Youth Court in due course."
Cops also said they were investigating footage of another attack on Jamal’s sister, where a young girl in a headscarf was taunted and shoved by school pupils.
The spokesman said: “On November 28, after visiting the victim’s family, police were made aware of a second video, in which a young female from the same family was assaulted at school. Police re-visited the family and have begun to investigate a public order offence.
“The victims and their family have been receiving ongoing support from police and other partner agencies including Kirklees Council, as part of the Syrian Refugee resettlement programme and this continues with additional support while they are victims of crime.
“We are also aware of rumours which are circulating on social media of the individuals involved in these incidents and there have been no reports made to West Yorkshire Police which substantiate these claims.”
