Terrifying moment huge tornado hurtles towards Italy tourist resort as storms batter south-west coast

INCREDIBLE footage shows a colossal tornado barrelling over choppy seas towards a tourist resort in Italy today.

The video clip shows a tornadic waterspout, which looks like a superstorm from the blockbuster movie  Twister, moving towards the south-western city of Salerno.

Witnesses say the massive column of water lifted around 20 heavy shipping containers in the port city and threw them around like children’s toys.

Officials said the terrifying tornado was first spotted at 3pm.

At least two people were injured when the dangerous storm ripped through Salerno, reports .

Video footage of the twister has went viral with online viewers calling the vortex “incredible.”

Tornadic waterspouts are tornadoes which form over water.

The region has experienced heavy rainfall over recent days with firefighters and other emergency workers battling flooding in the town of Sala Consilina.

Crotone, a port city on the south east of Italy, has been battered by high winds which have damaged buildings this week.

The town of Calabria, in the boot-shaped country's "toe", was hit by a whirlwind which nearly lifted a passenger train off the tracks, reports local media.
