THE SUN SAYS

Are you sure the Brexit deal is ‘set in stone’, PM? Spain doesn’t seem to think so…

How can EU members tear up parts of the deal, yet our Prime Minister insists she can’t?

Theresa May

A deal breaker

SO much for Theresa May’s claim that her Brexit deal is now set in stone. Spain wants a rethink.

They’re not happy about including Gibraltar in it. Nor about possibly extending our transition period.

Nor are the French.

And unless those concerns are allayed, Spain “won’t be able to agree to it”, says foreign minister Josep Borrell.

How can EU members tear up parts of the deal, yet our Prime Minister insists she can’t? She hasn’t signed away all our sovereign rights quite yet.

The Sun is mildly encouraged by her now trying to convince Brussels to agree a tech solution to resolve the Irish border issue without the toxic “backstop” arrangement. It should have been central to our negotiations months ago.

But who trusts Brussels not simply to find fault with it in perpetuity to stop us escaping their clutches?

The PM must secure our power to leave the customs union — the European Union’s foundation stone — without needing their consent.

Otherwise her deal looks doomed to us — possibly her time in No10 with it.

Get us out

IMAGINE if six years after the Brexit vote and three years after “leaving” we are still tied to the EU in every conceivable way.

Voters will be merciless towards a Government which has failed to extricate us by then.

So it is jaw-dropping to hear the Business Secretary say the “transition period” limbo might need extending till the end of 2022, after the June election that year.

Theresa May says it’s “important” to be out before polling day. No kidding!

If not, Leave voters will flock to a party committed to actually ensuring it happens.

Rape disgrace

A NEW parole panel confirms what The Sun always knew . . . that John Worboys is a dangerous predator who still considers rape acceptable.

Shame, then, on the previous board that lined up the black cab rapist for freedom only ten months ago.

This remorseless monster would have been back on our streets were it not for two brave victims campaigning alongside The Sun. Instead Worboys is behind bars for the foreseeable future and potentially facing new charges.

We are proud to have played a part — and to have forced the Government to open up parole judgments to scrutiny. But how can any panel have made such a grotesque misjudgment?

New parole chief Caroline Corby moans that her members have lost confidence since finding themselves in the spotlight — and witters on about a lack of ethnic diversity on panels. She has a far more pressing recruitment problem:

Eliminating gullible bleeding-hearts, easily duped by violent criminals’ sob stories.
