Mum horrified to find Asda banana ‘covered in blood’ as son, 5, peels it
Gemma Grange, 31, said she was “freaked out” when she grabbed the oozing fruit from her five-year-old boy
A MUM was horrified when her young son peeled open a banana and found it was “covered in blood”.
Gemma Grange, 31, said she was “freaked out” when she grabbed the oozing fruit from her five-year-old boy.
She told the: "As I peeled it, it was all red. I have not seen one like that before so I freaked out and just thought 'what the hell is that'.
"I thought it was blood at first."
Gemma had bought the banana from a branch of Asda in Bristol and was fuming to be given just a £5 voucher when she complained to the supermarket.
The oozing could be down to a bacteria that causes a minor disease in the fruit - called Mokillo - turning them slightly red. However, this has not been confirmed by Asda.
A friend went in-store to hand over the fruit and asked whether staff were going to be checking other bunches to insure children didn’t chomp into oozing bananas.
But Gemma was “disgusted” to hear that staff said this would not be possible.
She said: “They should have done more, not just palmed me off with a £5 voucher.
"We love bananas but the thought of eating one now makes me sick.”
Asda has been approached for comment.
