He armed himself with an air pistol and when cops arrived Wilson, from South Shields, yelled: “Go for it, go, go, go.”

Officers used rubber bullets before a single shot from a rifle hit him in the chest and he died later in hospital.

His final words on being hit by the round were to shout "Ah, cushty!" - meaning "great."

That night he had gone to his former girlfriend's house. Kayleigh Reay said: "There was a bang and I heard James laughing and then there was another bang."

Kayleigh, 28, said he was "loving and funny" but was also depressed and "didn't want to be here any more".

His dad Carl Wilson said: "I think, like young lads do, he wanted to go out in blaze of glory, that is why he did it the way he did."

The hearing continues.
