Fall in ‘Stop and Search’ checks by the police have led to the lowest number of drug busts in 14 years

Cops made 135,728 drug seizures in 2017-2018, the fewest in 14 years, figures show

DRUG BUSTS have plunged to the lowest level for 14 YEARS because of the dramatic fall in ‘Stop and Search’ checks by police.

Home Office figures revealed police and Border Force made 135,728 drugs seizures in 2017-2018 – down 2 per cent and the lowest level since 2003-2004.

Cannabis busts have almost halved in the past decade alone.

Government sources insisted the lower seizures also reflected the “prevalence” of drugs on Britain’s streets.

A Home Office spokesman said: “Drugs can devastate lives, ruin families and damage communities.

“The Government is taking this seriously and is committed to tackling the illicit drug trade, protecting the most vulnerable and helping those with a drug dependency to recover and turn their lives around.”
