Man arrested after girl, 17, is ‘raped in woods’ in Manchester

Greater Manchester Police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the alleged attack in Ashton-Under-Lyne on Tuesday night

A MAN has been arrested after a teenage girl was allegedly raped in woodland in Greater Manchester.

The 17-year-old victim was said to have been attacked in woodland in Ashton-under-Lyne last night.

Officers have now detained an 18-year-old man in connection with the investigation as the victim receives specialist support.

A wooded area close to the River Tame and an Asda supermarket was taped off on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses reported seeing forensic officers at the scene.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police confirmed an investigation was underway and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Joe Harrop told the : "We have been carrying out numerous lines of enquiry since the initial report was made last night and we now have an 18-year-old in custody arrested on suspicion of rape.

"I want to stress that our investigation remains in the early stages and continue to urge anybody with information to contact police."

A statement previously released by police said: "Shortly after 10pm on Tuesday, November 6, police were called to reports that a teenager had been raped in a wooded area near Cavendish Street in Ashton-under-Lyne.

"Officers attended and are now providing specialist support to the 17-year-old girl.

"An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing."
