Labour’s Keir Starmer meddles in Brexit AGAIN – telling Eurocrats party could back second referendum

The Shadow Brexit Secretary is jetting off to Brussels today for talks with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier

LABOUR'S Keir Starmer is to meddle in Brexit talks again today - telling the EU that Labour could back a second referendum to overturn the first result.

The Shadow Brexit Secretary is jetting off to Brussels today for talks with the bloc's Brexit officials.

Sir Keir Starmer said Labour won't be voting for a blind Brexit where we don't know what a future trade deal will look like

He will also step up warnings about MPs voting for a "blind Brexit" today as he tries to stop Leave-backing Labour MPs like Caroline Flint and Gareth Snell from voting for Theresa May's deal.

The political plans for what our future relationship with the EU might look like won't be legally binding, unlike the withdrawal agreement which will be set in stone - and Labour will say we don't know exactly what it will look like.

The party has said it won't back the PM's agreement unless it meets a series of tests - which it is unlikely to do.

Ahead of his trip Sir Keir said: "This is crunch time in the Brexit negotiations."

He added: "Yet government divisions and delays mean that little time has been spent debating what our future trading and security relationship will be after Brexit.

"Months of deadlock in Theresa May's government mean we're facing continued uncertainty and the prospect of years of further negotiations over our future relationship with the EU."

Some MPs fear that the 21-month transition period won't be long enough to seal a future trade deal with the bloc.

And yesterday a Momentum poll showed that 92 per cent of the grassroots group want Labour to vote against the withdrawal deal.

Many of them want a second referendum to overturn the result of our historic 2016 vote.

Labour plans to table a no-confidence vote in the PM and try and force a general election if MPs vote down her deal in the coming weeks.

And yesterday the EU's Michel Barnier sparked fury by saying Britain could come BACK into the EU after Brexit.

Theresa May has warned that another vote would destroy Brits' trust in democracy - and she would NEVER hold one.

Tory party chairman Brandon Lewis said Labour had "spent the last two years doing everything they possibly can to frustrate the Brexit process" and would continue to do so.

He added: "They promised to respect the referendum, but voted against the EU Withdrawal Act and now want to rerun the referendum, tearing up their pledge.

"Labour would take the country back to square one".

Yesterday Theresa May insisted she would not seal a deal "at any cost" but said she was confident that one was on the cards.

With just weeks left, Theresa May’s top table met for a mammoth three hours on Brexit in a bid to end deadlock over the Irish border.

Attorney General Geoffrey Cox declared a climb down by Brussels this week to agree to look at a joint arbitration mechanism to decide when to end the backstop plan could be the basis to a compromise agreement.
