Speaking at a conference last night, Mr Barnier was asked whether Britain could change its mind about quitting the EU, .

He replied: "If the UK changes its red lines, then we will adapt immediately.

“After [Brexit] it will be a third country, and like a third country it can ask to join the EU."

He also vowed to oppose Nigel Farage's vision for Europe - revealing the ex-Ukip boss told him he wanted to see the EU collapse entirely.

Mr Barnier said to Mr Farage at a recent meeting: "You led Brexit, you won and now we are delivering Brexit.

"Can I ask you how you see the relationship between the UK and the EU after Brexit?"

But the Eurosceptic replied: "Mr Barnier, after Brexit the EU will no longer exist."

Brexiteer MPs hit back at Mr Barnier for suggesting Brits might want to return to the EU in future.

Jacob Rees-Mogg told The Sun: "It is unlikely the UK would want to rejoin because as a new member would be have to sign up to all the existing arrangements including the Euro and Schengen."

Nigel Evans added: "After seeing how abusive the EU has been during the negotiations, why would we ever want to?"
