Doubts were raised by pupils at Stoke High School in Ipswich, Suffolk, after he joined this term and a photograph posted on Snapchat went viral.

A girl in his Year 11 class also grew concerned after claiming he had "bombarded her with texts" and feared he was older than he said.

It's since emerged that the student, who speaks in broken English, admitted he's much older than his classmates.

One mum, who asked not to be named, told the : "My son asked him how old he was and he replied that he was aged 25 and married with two kids.

"I feel the school could have done more before allowing him into the school. I also feel a little disgusted about the school not putting the safety of the 'real' students first."

Classmates are reported to have found a Facebook profile in his name, which apparently shows him with a full beard, hairy chest and drinking beer.

His page listed him as a former architecture student at the Islamic Azad University in Abadan, Iran, who had lived in Erfurt, Germany.

"She was a bit concerned because he seemed so old. He kept messaging her during the night, and in the morning he texted her saying, 'Hello, how are you?'

"She told the maths teacher and was taken to the safeguarding teacher who looked at the messages and said there was nothing sinister about them."

Last week, a pupil took a picture of the individual wearing uniform in a year 11 lesson, adding the caption: "How's there a 30 year old man in our maths class".

The Home Office has taken on the investigation into the age of the pupil and how he became enrolled at the school, but refused to comment on individual cases.

Sources at the Home Office confirmed that the investigation was being treated “seriously” and appealed for the pupil to be given privacy.

In a statement, Stoke High School said: “This is a matter for the Home Office and we have referred it to them."

School bosses dropped a suggestion from a previous statement which suggested that the pupil was an asylum seeker.

The Sun Online has approached the Home Office and Stoke High School for further comment.
