Instead he said Labour MPs and pro-Remain Tories should risk a No Deal outcome by voting against the PM in the Commons.

Mr Blair's intervention came as it emerged he has cost the taxpayer more than £1million since leaving office.

Mr Blair said: "We are approaching Brexit crunch time. Everyone is going to come under intense pressure to agree a 'reasonable deal', Labour MPs especially. They should resist."

He lashed out at Mrs May's Chequers proposals which would see Britain continue to follow EU rules on goods without having a say on them.

The ex-PM said the plan "has virtually zero support" from voters, adding that it would be "madness" for MPs to back it.

He concluded, "MPs should vote against the deal while saying to their constituents: 'We cannot, in all conscience, agree with this, but the final decision is yours."

"I promise them as someone who used to win elections: no one will lose their seat on this basis.

"But vote through a botched negotiation that you don’t believe in and the backlash will last a political lifetime."

Tory MP Bob Seely blasted Mr Blair for his meddling, saying: "More crass political opportunism from the man who gave us the Iraq War."

Mrs May is hoping to win over dozens of Labour MPs who are worried that voting down her plan would lead to an economically damaging No Deal outcome.

In a separate development, it emerged today that Mr Blair has claimed more than £1million of public money to fund his office since he stepped down in 2007.

Former prime ministers are entitled to a "public duty cost allowance" to pay for their ongoing activities in public life.

Mr Blair has been given a total of £1,077,888 - without having to submit receipts showing how he spends it.

A spokesman told the Sunday Times: "Tony Blair receives what is given to former prime ministers in exactly the same way as his predecessors, including reimbursement for costs associated with his former role."

Labour MEP's sick joke about Brexit voters dying

A TOP Labour politician has sparked fury by claiming Brexit voters are dying out.

MEP Richard Corbett joked that Brexit could soon be overturned because so many Leave supporters will have died.

He said: "As someone joked to me the other day, where there's death, there's hope."

Mr Corbett, who leads Labour in the European Parliament, was blasted for his tasteless quip.

Tory MP Peter Bone told the Mail on Sunday: "This remark is as tasteless as it is misguided.

"In their zeal to defy democracy and overturn the verdict of the 2016 referendum, arch-Remainers wrongly assume that the clear majority for Leave is dwindling."

Older voters were much more likely to support Leave while younger Brits backed Remain.
