Alec Baldwin denies punching driver over parking space as actor charged with assault in New York
ACTOR Alec Baldwin has denied punching a man in the face over a parking spot in Manhattan after being charged with assault.
The 60-year-old has spoken out hours after he was taken into the New York Police Department's 6th Precinct near his Greenwich Village home.
Taking to Twitter he said: “Normally, I would not comment on something as egregiously misstated as today’s story.
“However, the assertion that I punched anyone over a parking spot is false.I wanted to go on the record stating as much.
“I realize that it has become a sport to tag people w as many negative charges and defaming allegations as possible for the purposes of click bait entertainment.
“Fortunately, no matter how reverberating the echos, it doesn’t make the statements true.”
Officials said the men were arguing and pushing each other before Baldwin turned violent and the 49-year-old motorist was taken to hospital with jaw pains.
The actor was taken into custody just before 2pm local time outside his home in New York City's West Village.
Cops said Baldwin "assaulted someone for a parking spot that they were both going for".
The star said he was trying to park his Cadillac Escalade when a man driving a Saab quickly pulled up and took the space.
The actor has become known for his sarcastic impression of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live and minutes after the incident the President was asked about the arrest.
He said "I wish him luck" when reporters mentioned that Baldwin had been detained in the city.
The international superstar has won three Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe awards, seven Screen Actors Guild Awards and been nominated for an Academy Award.
He is mainly known for appearing in a host of popular TV shows including Friends, Will and Grace and Saturday Night Live.
