It’s high time we began spelling out to the EU the consequences of carrying out their various juvenile threats

Truck wars

THERE’S an obvious solution if British trucks are made to queue at Calais while Irish ones are waved through. After all, two can play that game.

Our Government can instruct customs chiefs at Dover to prioritise our lorries and keep Irish ones parked up. Not to mention French ones.

It’s high time we began spelling out to the EU the consequences of carrying out the various juvenile threats with which they have bombarded us in the two years since the referendum. We have been too well-mannered too long.

Part of the problem is that our politicians and theirs have talked at cross-purposes.

Ours have been committed to fulfilling the Leave vote and achieving a reasonable, mutually beneficial deal.

Theirs have devoted their energies to issuing blood-curdling menaces and playground jibes, all designed to force Britain to reverse the result.

They have been encouraged to do so by Remoaner politicians who have shamefully conspired with them hoping to engineer a second vote.

The Sun, like all sensible people, wants friendly relations with our EU allies post-Brexit. We increasingly doubt that feeling is mutual.

The Office for National Statistics figures ought to sober up anyone who believes the health service can simply soldier on, structured and funded as it has been since 1948.

Within 20 years our population of 66million will be at least 73million, with a much larger percentage over 65 and far more over 85 too.

The NHS is already predicted to engulf 38 per cent of all public service spending within just five years. What will it consume within 20? We must have a new way to fund the NHS and social care, as other nations with superb health systems do.

The sooner Britain gets real the better.

History makers

WE’RE proud to be named one of the 12 iconic brands to have had the greatest impact on Britain over the last half-century.

Even more so to be the only paper among them. Believe it or not, we were nominated by a former Guardian executive.

We suppose it’s fitting that we’re listed right next to Marmite. But we give thanks every day for the millions of Brits who DO love The Sun, in print and online.

It wasn’t us that made the paper what it has become since 1969. It was our readers, every one of you.
