Residents in California Garden heard "screaming and shouting" outside but initially believed it was coming from Halloween revellers.

One said: “There was thunder and lightning. It was the most bizarre scene ever.

“By the side of my house there’s a path and we heard lots of shouting and screaming but it was Halloween.

"I walked down to the car and I couldn’t believe what I saw.

"It was eerily quiet for the number of police that were here. You don’t get that here."

Another told : “I just heard shouting and screaming and thought it was Halloween.

"There was a big ruckus outside.

“I came out to see what was going on and she was lying on the floor.

"It had all happened before she got here.

“Her friends had parked here and come to get her and she collapsed. Then the police and ambulance arrived.

"I think she was attacked in a house along the road."

Ambulances rushed to the scene at around 8:15pm last night and paramedics gave the woman emergency treatment before racing her to Derriford Hospital.

She remains in a critical condition.

Devon and Cornwall Police were alerted to the attack by the ambulance service.

They arrested a 27-year-old man at the scene after he gave himself up to officers.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and is today in police custody awaiting questioning.

Police are this morning at the scene as inquiries continue.

The ambulance service said in a statement: "We were called at 20:10 and attended with an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle.

"One patient was taken to Derriford Hospital."
