Michael Gove says No Deal Brexit could become lead option in November
Downing Street did not dispute Mr Gove's claims and said they are working 'very hard' to a deal with Brussels
THERESA May could declare No Deal is the “lead option” in just four weeks because no agreement will be struck with the EU by December, Michael Gove has warned.
The Environment Secretary admitted that divorce talks could go all the way to the end of the year - just three months before exit day.
He told a Lords committee: “It might be the case – and we have seen who European negotiations work – it might be the case progress is made at the October council, progress is made at the
November council, and it’s even as late as the December council before a deal is done.”
And he added: “The Prime Minister will say at a given point if we believe we cannot get a deal that the government is moving to preparing for no deal and that no deal is the government’s lead option.”
The dramatic announcement could come next month if no breakthrough is achieved, but it would likely infuriate some MPs who say No Deal must never be a Brexit option.
Last night Downing Street did not dispute Mr Gove’s claims, saying only that they were working “very hard” for a deal.
