Hurricane Michael tracker – Where is the storm, what category is it now and will it hit the UK
After blasting the coast of Florida with 155mph winds, Hurricane Michael has swept across three other states and is now heading across the Atlantic
HURRICANE Michael has wrought destruction across Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia.
The Category 4 monster has already claimed the lives of at least 11 people and is now heading out across the Atlantic towards Europe.
Where is Hurricane Michael now and what category is it?
Michael hit the Florida Panhandle at Mexico Beach on Wednesday as Category 4 hurricane
It was then as downgraded to a Tropical Storm as it moved across Alabama, the Carolinas and Georgia before hitting Georgia.
Many of the areas which it hit in the Carolinas are still recovering from Hurricane Florence last month.
As it moved inland towards the north-east there was still heavy rain and strong winds.
Winds reduced to about 65mph over Virginia and as of Friday morning it was about 185 miles east-northeast of Norfolk, in the Atlantic.
What impact did it have?
It has now been confirmed that a total of 11 people have died - six of them in Florida and five in Virginia.
Among those killed were Sarah Radney, 11, was died when a metal-framed gazebo was picked up by winds and then crashed through the roof of her home on to her head.
Michael caused a 14ft high storm surge which submerged homes.
More than 370,000 people in Florida were ordered to evacuate but officials believe many ignored the warning.
Despite the warnings, 320,000 people disregarded mandatory or voluntary evacuation notices,
In Mexico Beach, 280 residents who ignored evacuation orders are missing.
Around 6,000 are thought to have sought refuge in official shelters, mainly in Florida.
Winds knocked out power to more than 900,000 homes and businesses across Florida, Alabama, the Carolinas and Georgia.
Will it hit the UK?
The National Hurricane Center's charts show the remnants of Hurricane Michael veering in the direction of Europe.
The Met Office has said forecasters are “keeping an eye” on Michael as it approaches Europe and the UK and may issue advice if the situation changes.
But it stressed if Michael does arrive, it will “weaken considerably” as it passes over cooler waters off the coast of Spain, France and the UK.
