Boris Johnson forced to delete social media post over Ireland slip up

The ex-Foreign Secretary is being scrutinised  for a comment he made last night calling the Irish border Brexit deal the 'backdrop'

BORIS Johnson faced fresh ridicule last night after referring to the Irish border Brexit insurance deal as the “backdrop”.

In the latest gaffe, the ex-Foreign Secretary was forced to delete his social media post and correct it to “backstop”.

It came as he joined Eurosceptics in praising EU boss Donald Tusk for piling pressure on Theresa May with the offer of a Canada-style trade deal.

Just days ago Chancellor Philip Hammond savaged the Tory saying: “Boris is a wonderful character, but he’s never been a detail man.”

The Irish ‘backstop’ is a position of last resort agreed between the UK and EU to protect the open border in Ireland in the event of a No Deal Brexit.

Controversially it would tie the North to the EU’s regulatory regime for goods and agriculture – effectively given the EU legal control over most of the North’s economy.
