Motorist spotted driving with car full of tree branches on way to the tip
Police have called the decision 'absolute madness'
A MAN was stopped by the police after he packed his car full of tree branches to take to the tip.
His windscreen was obstructed and he couldn't reach the gear stick as he drove down Heaton Moor Road, Stockport.
Police called the move "absolute madness".
PC Andy Monaghan said he'd "never seen anything like it" and he had risked "seriously injuring someone".
The man in his 40s, who has not been named, had been doing gardening work for an elderly couple on September 8 and was taking the leafy branches to the tip when he was stopped by police.
He decided to fill the blue Toyota Corolla to the brim with branches so he would only have to make one trip.
But he was asked to empty his car in order to drive safely and then had to make multiple journeys to the tip to throw the branches away.
WHAT ARE THE LAWS FOR OVERFILLING A CAR?
- Anything bigger than 4cm obstructing the front windscreen is an offence
- Having a satnav or furry dice obstructing more than 4cm of your windscreen would be illegal
- Blocking the rear windscreen isn't illegal if you have both wing mirrors intact
- Overloading your car can put you over a legal weight limit which is different for each type of car (check your vehicle handbook)
- This is punishable by a fine of up to £300
