FRIENDLY FIRE

Boris Johnson makes ‘good headlines but not good policies’, fellow Brexiteer David Davis says

The two men have previously been close allies in the Brexit battle

BORIS Johnson has faced friendly fire from his own side – with even fellow Brexiteers hitting out at his outlandish policy ideas.

David Davis accused the ex-Foreign Secretary of making “good headlines but not good policies” in a blow to Mr Johnson’s leadership ambitions.

Mr Davis said he admired Boris’ charisma and described him as a “great mate”.

But he mocked the former Mayor of London over his proposal to build a bridge between Britain and Northern Ireland.

Mr Davis told Sky News yesterday: “He wants to cancel HS2 and spend it on a bridge to Northern Ireland. I don’t want to do that.

“I think one of the blights of British politics is politicians having fantastic ideas that cost a fortune and don’t do much good. If you’re going to use that money, use it for broadband or something else.

“Boris is a great mate of mine, we have a very knockabout friendship, but quite a lot of his ideas, I think, are good headlines but not necessarily good policies.”

Today he repeated his dig, telling ITV: “Boris is somebody who fires off ideas by the dozen and people who do that, half the ideas are no good ones and they need someone around them to sift them out.”

The two Brexiteers have been close allies and both resigned from the Cabinet within 24 hours in protest against the Prime Minister’s Chequers plan.

But Mr Davis has remained loyal to Theresa May and has refused to back Mr Johnson’s leadership ambitions.
