REPUBLICAN Senator Jeff Flake has confirmed that he will vote to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, despite the allegations against him.
But who is Senator Flake and how does his vote count?
Who is Jeff Flake?
Republican Senator Jeff Flake was born on December 31, 1962 in Arizona.
He currently represents his home state as a senior US senator and was elected to the seat in 2012.
He was a member of the House of Representatives for 12 years, starting his tenure in 2000, before being elected to the US Senate.
While he is known as a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, he generally votes overwhelmingly in line with Trump's position.
Flake announced on October 24, 2017, that he would not seek re-election in 2018.
Flake became Arizona’s senior US Senator upon the death of John McCain.
Who is his wife Cheryl?
Flake and his wife Cheryl (née Bae) have been married since 1985.
The couple met during the early 1980s when they attended school together at Brightman Young University.
They live in Mesa in a home worth $587,000 and have five children – a daughter and four sons.
They also have one grandchild.
The Flakes are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and Flake has spent time in Zimbabwe and South Africa as a Mormon missionary.
Did the Arizona Senator vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh?
On Friday, September 28, 2018, the Republican senator said he would vote to confirm Trump’s Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Until that point, Flake, who sits on the Senate Judiciary Committee, was a key undecided Republican vote.
Later the same day, the committee voted to give Kavanaugh a favourable recommendation - the next round of voting will be held by the Senate.
Flake has announced that he wanted a limited FBI investigation of the sexual assault claims against Kavanaugh.
He said he would not be ready to vote for Kavanaugh until the FBI conducts a background investigation into the sexual misconduct claims.
