Student, 19, relives date rape drug horror after drink spiked at freshers’ week party leaving her in critical care unit
A STUDENT has relived her date rape drug horror after her drink was spiked at a freshers' week party - leaving her in a critical care unit.
Mimi Walter, 19, was found alone in a nightclub bathroom on Friday night before paramedics rushed her to Royal Cornwall Hospital.
The Falmouth University student said she drank just two gin and tonics in her flat before heading out to the club, reports.
In a public Facebook post now shared more than 12,000 times, Mimi is warning others to keep drinks close at all times and not to accept them from strangers.
Posting pictures of herself before and after the ordeal, she wrote on Saturday: "Last night my drink was spiked at my university freshers event. I was found alone in the club bathroom by my best friend.
"The drug has a paralysing affect on the body and makes you completely unaware to what is going on.
"I spent the night in an ambulance with a team of paramedics and then was taken to hospital early this morning where I was looked after in the critical care unit. I have no real recollection of last night."
GHB, also known as gammahydroxybutrate, is one of the most common date rape drugs and can be extremely dangerous, causing the victim to feel drowsy in as little as ten minutes.
Mimi, from Malmesbury in Wiltshire, says she feels lucky to be alive.
"I was fortunate I was found in time and got the care I needed, a couple hours later it is likely it would’ve been fatal," she wrote in her post.
"Don’t accept drinks off anyone, keep your drink close; if you feel you have been spiked seek medical assistance ASAP."
What is GHB?
- GHB (gammahydroxybutrate) is used to treat narcolepsy but it can be a highly dangerous drug with sedative and anaesthetic effects.
- A typical dose is only a teaspoonful, making it easy to overdose.
- Usually sold by dealers for around £15 for a small bottle, it is an odourless, colourless oily liquid that has a slightly salty taste.
- It can be particularly dangerous when used with alcohol and other depressant or sedative substances.
- The drowsy effects start after about 10 minutes to an hour and can last for up to seven hours.
- GHB is a Class C drug and possession can lead to a two year prison sentence -- and being caught supplying can result in 14 years in prison.
Recent figures reveal that the number of reported drink-spiking cases in the UK have more than doubled in the last three years, while the true figure is believed to be much higher due to unreported cases.
In 2016, killer Stephen Port was jailed after using GBH to drug and murder men he met on a gay dating app before dumping their bodies in a graveyard.
