Only one in ten Brits will be smokers in five years and number has ‘dropped by one million since 2014’
The proportion of smokers in Britain is expected to drop from 14.9 to as low as 8.5 per cent by 2023
ONLY one in ten people will smoke in five years, health officials estimate.
Public Health England said smoking rates among adults are expected to fall from the current level of 14.9 per cent by 2023.
The number of smokers in England has fallen by more than one million since 2014, it added.
If the trend continues, it means the percentage of adults smoking by the year 2023 could be between 8.5 and 11.7.
It comes as PHE launched its annual Stoptober campaign, fronted by TV’s Jeremy Kyle, encouraging England’s six million smokers to quit in October.
Kyle, 53, quit his 35-year 20-a-day habit with the aid of e-cigs.
PHE said the best way to quit is with help from local stop smoking services along with quitting aids.
This year, PHE is offering an online “Personal Quit Plan” to help smokers find the right support to help them pack it in.
Stress and boredom are the main reasons teens give for smoking.
