The survey, conducted by orthopaedic support firm Neo G, also found that petting animals, going on holiday, seeing pals and spending time being alone with their partner also made people feel much younger.

Those who were the most active found that they felt more than 12 years younger than those who were less active.

Chelmsford in Essex was the “youngest” city in the poll of 1,000 adults.

Residents there feel 15 years younger than their ages, followed by Plymouth and Manchester.

Bottom of the list is Aberdeen at eight years.

“People who look and feel younger than their years have always been a mystery, so hopefully our research has managed to expose some of the activities we can all try to incorporate into our life.

“What the research has highlighted is the need to keep looking after yourself and enjoying the best things in life, no matter what your age — whether that’s being active or spending time with friends and family.

“Hopefully everyone will be able to find something in the research that they can implement in their own lives and enjoy the benefits of feeling young at heart.”
