Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon demolished in New York Democrat primary.. but insists hard-left ‘wave’ will sweep America
Former 'Sex and the City' star lost lost in her bid to become governor of New York to Andrew Cuomo after only getting 35 per cent of votes compared to Cuomo's 65 per cent
GOVERNER of New York Andrew Cuomo has beaten Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon in a Democratic primary that paves the way for him to serve third term.
This was Nixon’s third failed attempt to beat an establishment Democrat by running on a hard left platform.
Cuomo went into the primary with greater financial resources than Nixon and held a substantial lead over her throughout the campaign.
With 93 per cent of precincts reporting, Cuomo has racked up 65 per cent to Nixon’s 35 per cent.
The defeat set Cuomo up for a November battle with Marc Molinaro, the Republican nominee for New York governor.
Cuomo’s campaign did have its controversies however, including a postal campaign that questioned Nixon's support for Jewish people.
Nixon, who subsequently revealed she had two Jewish children, called the pro-Cuomo letters "dirty, sleazy politics".
Cuomo claimed to have no knowledge of the postal campaign but his spokeswoman later acknowledged that two former aides turned volunteers were behind the it.
Following the defeat, Nixon took to to thank her followers for their support and votes.
Her Tweet said: “I want to thank all of the #TeamCynthia volunteers, supporters, and voters who dedicated their time to championing the progressive message of our campaign.
“I'm so proud of all the work we've done to build a New York that works for all of us. #CynthiaForNY”
Nixon, who is best known for her Emmy-winning role as lawyer Miranda Hobbes on HBO's "Sex and the City," was counting on hard left voters looking to oust so-called 'establishment' politicians.
Speaking after he defeat, Nixon said: "Before we take our country back we have to take our party back. This is an incredible moment for progressives but it's not just a moment. It's a movement."
She also said she called to congratulate Governor Cuomo on his victory in their Democratic primary challenger.

She noted that while many people dismissed her challenge, Cuomo must have taken her seriously as he spent millions funding the primary campaign.
