A close family member told The Sun: “We spoke to her at 9.20am and she said she had just dropped the kiddies off at school.

“Then she rang back ten minutes later, screaming and saying she had been stabbed and her mother raced down to the hospital.

“I have been in shock all day. Fancy doing that to a mother of five little kiddies. The youngest is only two.

“It’s fortunate she didn’t have any of the children with her.”

Krystal was taken to hospital by helicopter but her wounds were said not to be life-threatening.

Her distraught relative added: "I never in a million years expected anything like this to happen.

“Krystal does not have a bad bone in her body, she is so nice and good and caring."

Police tonight arrested Peter Morley, 35, who is said to be known to the victim.

Scotland Yard said he had been held on suspicion of attempted murder and was in custody at a south London police station.

A friend of Krystal's, who did not want to be named, said earlier: "It's absolutely horrific.

"The children must be worried sick about their mum. But it sounds like she won't be in hospital too long.

"She was very lucky. There was so much blood apparently. They used towels to clear it up.

"She is such a lovely woman. We just can't believe this has happened."

Krystal is the latest person to be targeted amid a surge of knife and gun crime in the city, with more than 100 murders reported in London so far this year.

Woolwich resident Martin Suker, 25, said residents are becoming numbed to the violence.

"It's a sad thing to say but I think a lot of people in Woolwich have got quite used to the attacks," he said.

A woman was killed in an arson attack in Woolwich just last week, becoming the hundredth murder victim in the capital this year.

The knife crime bloodbath in London is blamed in part on the 200 gangs waging war on the streets over drug and turf disputes.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has been slammed by critics for failing to address the violent crime wave, with the number of stop and searches falling despite the increased violence.

Killings in Britain are now at a ten-year high, with London having a higher murder rate this year than New York.

The brutal stabbing is one of dozens that have taken place in London this year.

Knife crime has surged by 16 per cent in the capital, with 1,299 stabbings up to the end of April according to Met Police statistics.
