TV comic Sacha Baron Cohen is being sued for £73million for defamation by a US politician who said he was duped into appearing on his show.

Roy Moore, a former chief justice of Alabama’s Supreme Court, claims a disguised Baron Cohen, 46, tried to portray him as a sex offender on his show Who Is America?.

The lawsuit said Baron Cohen's show mocked him with a "false and fraudulent portrayal" that harmed Moore's reputation and caused "severe emotional distress" to his family.

In the disputed sketch, Baron Cohen, posing as ex-Mossad agent Colonel Erran Morad, demonstrated what he said was a 'gadget' for detecting paedophiles.

The 'wand' detector beeped when it came into Republican politician Moore's range.

Roy Moore said he never would have agreed to the interview in Washington, D.C., had he known that Morad was the Ali G and Borat creator.

Mr Moore, 71, is also suing network Showtime and parent firm CBS Corp.

Neither have commented.
