THIS is the shocking moment a man believed to be an off duty cop was stabbed by a hooded thug in an attempted car-jacking.

Horrifying footage shows the attacker threatening the victim by his Mini Cooper before brawling with him and knifing him in sight of an elderly woman.

The victim, who is in his 20s, had to be airlifted to hospital after he was assaulted outside a row of shops in Great Barr, Birmingham, shortly after 1.30pm this afternoon.

Shocking CCTV footage appears to show a vehicle drawing up to provide the man with a getaway as he walks over to his victim and demands his keys.

When the victim realises what's happening he races away but his assailant tears after him and is stabs him in front of a terrified elderly woman before making off in a dark blue Ford Fiesta.

Police said the victim, who has not yet been named, is believed to have sustained injuries that are not life-threatening or life-changing.

The CCTV footage shows the attacker racing off before making off from scene on the junction of Queslett Road and Moreton Avenue in a dark blue Ford Fiesta.

A witness was inside Expressions hair salon when they saw the carnage break out.

They told : "It was frightening. They came right up to the window here and smashed against it.

"He was after his silver Mini Cooper and, after stabbing him in the ribs, made off in another vehicle, a blue Ford, which looked like it came to pick him up."

The witness added: "It all happened outside here and the nail bar. The bloke said he was on off-duty police officer and was in his late 20s, early 30s.

"He seemed OK and ran towards the attacker outside the estate agents. Paramedics arrived and put him in an ambulance.

"The attacker had a knife in like a carrier bag but he managed to get away.”

West Midlands Police confirmed that the victim was a man in his 20s, who was approached before his attacker demanded his keys.
