Daredevil scientist plunges into the sea at Bournemouth Air Festival after the engine on his jetpack ignited
Dr Angelo Grubisic resurfaced unharmed after the jetpack engine on his arm ignited
A SCIENTIST showing off his jetpack at Bournemouth Air Festival had to plunge into the sea when an engine on his arm ignited.
Dr Angelo Grubisic had just launched himself from the pier in Bournemouth, Dorset, when one of the small jet engines strapped to his body ignited.
Pictures show flames shooting out of a turbine engine attached to his right arm as he flew at a height of 20ft.
The daredevil jetpack pilot pulled his arm away from the rest of his equipment which sent him into a spin.
Witness Geordie Hutchings, 23, was stood close to Dr Grubisic’s intended landing site on the beach.
He said: “He travelled about 500 metres through the air and then all of a sudden I saw flames coming from a jet on his arm.
“Everyone was shocked and there was silence for a while."
A lifeboat also raced out to help, but Dr Angelo Grubisic, of Southampton University, resurfaced unharmed.
