David Cameron makes fresh dig at Michael Gove saying that he’s so behind with his political memoir that he’s ‘still one of the good guys’

The former PM made the joke at a party with fellow Conservatives earlier this summer while he was updating them on the progress of his book

DAVID Cameron has taken a fresh dig at Michael Gove - telling friends that he was so behind writing his memoirs that his old friend was “still one of the good guys”.

Sources close to the former PM say he has finally finished writing his long-awaited account of his time in power.

And our revelation lays bare the animosity he is set to reveal for Mr Gove, who he blames for ending his political career by defeating him in the EU referendum.

At a party with fellow Tories earlier this summer, Mr Cameron joked: “As you know I’ve been working on my book.

“It’s taken a while and quite a bit longer than expected.

“To give you an idea of my progress, I’m on chapter 37 and Michael Gove is still one of the good guys.”

The latest sign of Mr Cameron’s grudge towards Mr Gove comes after The Sun revealed earlier this year that he plays an online game that lets players bash his foe.

“Whack a Gove” users bop a mole-like cartoon of the politician for points.

The Tory duo fell out spectacularly over the EU.

Mr Cameron has vowed never to forgive him for taking charge of the successful Vote Leave campaign in 2016. The pair and their wives had been close chums but have not spoken since Mr Cameron quit as PM hours after Britain backed Brexit.

The former PM was initially planning to publish his explosive memoirs this autumn but opted to delay until next year to avoid his comments undermining Theresa May’s crunch Brexit negotiations.

He has promised to give a “frank” in his account of his six years in No10 - raising fears among the Tory leadership that they will spark fresh Cabinet rifts.

In another sign of the hatred he will reveal for Mr Gove, he told friends earlier this summer that the current Environment Secretary behaved like a “lunatic” in the referendum campaign.

Allies say Mr Cameron had no idea Mr Gove would betray him by choosing to back Brexit and didn’t realise “quite how mad he was,” according to the Sunday Times.

And revealing that he blames Mr Gove much more than Boris Johnson for ending his time in power, Mr Cameron’s friends added: “He was saying he feels even more cross with Gove than Boris.”

He hasn’t spoken to Mr Gove since he left No10 in July 2016.
In contrast, Mr Cameron has maintained relations with Boris Johnson - and the former PM even met him for private talks in a bid to stop him quitting as Foreign Secretary last month.
