Swedish Primie Minister blasts gangs of masked teens after fire-bomb rampages throughout the country
Violent scenes were seen in at least three of Sweden's largest towns and cities, as police were attacked with stones and rocks
CARS have been set alight and police attacked with rocks after masked gangs went on the rampage throughout the night across Sweden.
The outrageous scenes have prompted a furious response Prime Minister Stefan Löfven who blasted the "extremely organised" night of vandalism.
Speaking on Sveriges Radio P1, he fumed: 'I'm furious, for real. My question to these people is "what the f*** are you doing?"
According to police, at least 80 cars were set ablaze, predominantly in Sweden's second largest city, Gothenburg, with one truck and three caravans among the vehicles torched.
The nearby industrial town of Trollhättan and the city of Malmo were also targeted with fire-bombs and rampaging.
Trollhättan, which is just northeast of Gothenburg, saw the largest number of youth gathering.
The town saw at least six cars burned with rocks thrown at police and roads blocked.
It remains unclear if the incidents across the Swedish cities are linked, but with the attacks taking place at the same time, authorities have not rules out a connection.
Footage shared on Twitter shows fires burning through car parks in Frölunda Torg and Trollhättan, with other blazes reported in Hjällbo, north-east of Gothenburg.
Police confirmed that all the blazes were extinguished by midnight.
Photos of the destruction were posted online by Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet.
The images showed dozens of men dressed in black and wearing masks torching cars on a parking lot near Gothenburg.
Sweden's news agency TT confirmed that witnesses had seen "masked youngsters" running away.
At present, no arrests have been made but police confirmed that several young men had already been identified by officers at the scene.
Speaking to local media, police spokesman Hans Lippens said: “We have spoken with them but we cannot conclude they started the fires.
“We also have spoken with their parents.”
Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Lofven lashed out at the perpetrators, asking them: "What the heck are you doing?"
In an interview on Swedish radio, he said he was "really getting mad" and that "society must react in a tough manner."
He said the fires seemed to be "extremely organised."
No injuries have been reported, but the Prime Minister lambasted the violence for tying up emergency services and frightening residents.
Mr Lofven added: “You damage residential areas and ruin it for your neighbours.”
Speaking to local daily newspaper Goteborgs-Posten, Jonas Ransgaard, a member of the Goteborg City council, said: “I am speechless. This so terrible, it's destructive and it's pure evil.”
While the reason for the escalated gang violence is unknown, some believe it is due to the country’s upcoming elections, which are due to get underway in three weeks’ time.
