Taiwan hospital fire kills nine and injures at least 15 after blaze ripped through ward in New Taipei City

Footage shows beds lined up outside the hospital after 33 patients and three staff members were evacuated

A FIRE at a hospital in Taiwan has killed nine people and left at least 15 injured this morning.

The blaze centred on the seventh-floor hospice ward of the Weifu hospital in the northern region of New Taipei City.

The fire erupted at around 4.30am on Monday and was put out shortly after dawn.

Footage showed patients being wheeled out of the building in their hospital beds, while medical workers took others out on stretchers and into ambulances.

Reports suggest 33 patients and three staff members were evacuated.

Scores of ambulances lined up outside the hospital waiting to take victims to medical centres.

An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire, authorities said.

Premier William Lai said the Health Ministry was overseeing rescue efforts.

suggest it may have been caused by an electrical fault in a portable bed.
